Buttoned Up Ornate Thanks

I needed to send a thank you card this week and realized that all my thank you cards are very florally and feminine and that wouldn’t work.  So I set out to create a gender neutral card that could be sent to anyone.  Today’s card features the bold sentiment from the Ornate Thanks stamp set along with a pattern from the Peony Garden Designer Series Paper collection. Taking my cue from the DSP, I think the color palette of Gray Granite, Basic Black and Whisper White worked well and achieved my goal.

Materials & Measurements

• Gray Granite card base:  8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″, scored at 4 1/4″
• Whisper White card stock:  5 1/2″ x 2 1/2″, 5 1/4″ x 4″ (inside)

Details

• Stamp the sentiment in black ink and heat emboss with clear embossing powder along the right side of the card front.  I used the Stamparatus to make sure I got a really dark image.
• Dry emboss the Whisper White panel using the Subtles 3D embossing folder.
• Cut a Basic Black border using a border from the Ornate Borders dies.  
• Glue the black border to the embossed Whisper White panel and glue both to the left side of the card front, leaving a 1/4″ border from the card fold.

• Using the Layering Squares dies, cut 3 squares each from:  Gray Granite, Whisper White card stock and Peony Garden DSP.
• Layer the squares and glue together to create 3 tiles.
• Arrange the tiles in a cascading diamond pattern and glue to the Whisper White panel.

• Initially, this is what the end result of the card was.  But it definitely needed something more!

• I added the black enamel embellishments to the center of each “diamond”.  That seemed to give the card the finishing touch.  These enamel dots are not from Stampin’ Up!.  I had them in my stash and I liked that they’re flat and easily mailable.  

• Not sure I even needed to show the inside as it’s very simply embellished with a strip of DSP and Basic Black card stock glued to the left side of the Whisper White panel.  But it does add a little interest and leaves plenty of room for a thank you message.
• It also coordinates nicely with the envelope.

When I looked through my stockpile of cards, I realized that most are of the floral variety.  So I’ll be trying to create a few more like this that can be sent to anyone.  I do like that you can almost always find some non-floral patterns in most of the DSP collections that would jump start a card like this.
