Floral Essence Slimline Birthday Card

Happy new week!  I hope you had a nice weekend.  The summer is just flying by and I’m trying to enjoy it as much as I can.  I celebrated my birthday on Saturday with a wonderful dinner at my daughter, Emily’s and son-in-law, Mike’s house.  And of course, with my favorite little guy, Jack!

So have you see the recent trend in card making?  Slimline cards are everywhere on Pinterest and many stamping companies’ blogs.  Coincidentally, these came along at a time when I was getting a little bored with the usual A2 card.  I’ll still continue to make A2 cards as they are the standard card making size but I’m also happy to change it up and go BIG once in a while.

I reached for the Floral Essence stamp set to create this pretty slimline birthday card.  I forgot how much I  loved creating with these flowers when they came out in last year’s annual catalog.  And I still love them!

The card base measures 8 1/2″ x 6 3/4″ and is scored at 3 1/2″.

I wanted a clean looking card but with there being so much space, leaving it just white looked too plain.  The embossing folders I have are not long enough to cover the entire card front, so I added a 8 1/2″ x 3 1/4″ piece of Whisper White card stock that I scored at 1/4″ intervals to the card front.  This gave it a little more texture and added interest.

The front of the card is 1/4″ shorter than the back to allow for the Ornate Border to be glued to the bottom inside of the card front.  I cut two borders and pieced them together and trimmed them so they would cover the length of the card.  The seam where they’re connected is hidden by a flower.  Then I added a 8 1/2″ x 1/4″ strip of Highland Heather card stock to hide the horizontal border seam.  I did the same to the inside front.  This gives a nice finished look.

I stamped the flowers in Highland Heather, Flirty Flamingo and Balmy Blue ink.  Each flower consists of two of the large flowers which I offset before gluing and one small flower which I adhered with a Stampin’ Dimensional.  The leaves are stamped in Granny Apple Green.  Both the flowers and leaves are hand cut.  The sentiments is from the Celebrate Sunflowers stamp set and is also hand cut with a Basic Black hand cut mat.  Lastly, I added a few Clear Epoxy Droplets.

I stamped a flower and leaves using the masking technique.  As you can see, I forgot to stamp the middle of the flower center.  I’ll be sure to stamp it with Daffodil Delight ink before I mail the card.

I purchased a box of white #10 envelopes from an office supply store.  I’ll be using these for any slimline cards I make in there future.  These are considered resume envelopes and have a nice linen feel to them.

I really enjoyed making this card and know that I’ll be making more of these.  They’re fun, different, give a lot of room to embellish and I think would be totally unexpected to receive.  Even given the size, they don’t require any additional postage.

Thanks for stopping by today and I hope the week ahead is looking good for you.

Take care,

Rosanne
